Homeowners in a pinch don't scroll. They tap one of the three businesses Google surfaces at the top of Maps and dial. Everything below that fold is functionally invisible for emergency and high-intent searches.
The good news: ranking in the Map Pack is more about fundamentals than tricks. Google rewards businesses that look real, get reviewed often, and serve the area they claim to. Most operators we audit are missing at least two of those three.
Start with your Google Business Profile. Pick the most specific primary category that fits - 'HVAC contractor' beats 'contractor' - then fill every service field, add real photos monthly, and post weekly. Google reads activity as a signal of legitimacy.
Next, build a real page on your website for each city you serve. Not a thin doorway page - a useful one. Include the team that covers that area, projects you've done there, and locally relevant content.
Finally, ask every happy customer for a review. The single highest-correlation ranking signal in our data is recent, sustained review velocity. A trickle every month beats a flood once a year.
